Biography

Dr. Martin McCaffrey Is a Professor of Pediatrics at UNC and a Board Certified Neonatologist. He completed his pediatric residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego in 1989. Afterwards he served as Chief of Neonatology at Naval Medical Center San Diego for 9 years, the Navy Surgeon General’s Consultant for Neonatology for 8 years, and Chairman of the Navy Perinatal Advisory Board for 6 years.

Dr. McCaffrey retired as USN Medical Corps Captain and joined the UNC faculty in 2006. He is the Director of the Perinatal Quality Collaborative of North Carolina and serves on the National Quality Forum and Joint Commission Perinatal Steering Committee. In these roles, he has led nine statewide perinatal initiatives including a major program to help reduce bloodstream infections in NICUs.

Dr. McCaffrey has been a strong advocate and support for families facing difficult perinatal diagnoses. He is a member of the International Trisomy Alliance and Be Not Afraid Boards.
